1. The Unicorn of Death Episode Six |
Caverns of ChaosWritten by Don Reo
ACT ONE FADE IN: SCENE 1 We watch as GREYSTONE and his vassal MARKO ride up to Castle Greystone – a lovely castle by a moat that sparkles in the sunlight - they cross the road into the castle and disappear from view. Shot dissolves to a strangely red-orange colored hand. Shot pans back – the hand belongs to a man. The man is KING RICHARD GREYSTONE and he lies on his bed, sleeping and ill. The WIZARD TRAQUILL is in a chair beside the bed, watching over King Richard. Greystone enters with Marko behind him. Greystone crosses over to Traquill and looks down on his father. GREYSTONE How is he? TRAQUILL He’ll die soon without the fruit of the astrid tree. GREYSTONE And why doesn’t he have it? TRAQUILL I can’t get it. The only tree is in the Caverns of Chaos – a place of death and pain. Off limits for wizards. MARKO Let’s go. Marko and Greystone turn to leave. TRAQUILL Hold it. The two heroes stop and listen. TRAQUILL This disease is the result of a wizard’s spell. The blackest kind of magic. It’s ancient. Even I can’t make a dent in it. And I’m ancient. MARKO Vector. TRAQUILL The spell is powerful and unbreakable. There’s something very evil going on here. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg. GREYSTONE Then I’d better go alone. Marko, you stay here in case they’re planning some kind of sneak attack. Get Justin to help you. MARKO If I can find ‘em. He’s supposed to be covering the western perimeter tomorrow. TRAQUILL Erik, no man has ever returned from the Caverns of Chaos. If you’re trapped inside, you will die. GREYSTONE If it’s the only way to save my father, nothing will stop me. TRAQUILL I kinda figured that’d be your attitude. So kneel. Greystone kneels in front of the wizard. TRAQUILL I will give you a blessing that will protect you from death. One time and one time only. Traquill uses the monocle on Greystone. It casts a beam at him, then a golden glow surrounds the prince.
GREYSTONE Thank you. I’m on my way. Greystone rises and turns, beginning to leave the chamber. KING RICHARD Erik. Greystone turns back. GREYSTONE Father. Greystone kneels by his father’s bedside. KING RICHARD Erik, I am growing old. I don’t have much time left anyway. GREYSTONE Don’t say that. You’ll outlive all of us. KING RICHARD Erik. You must survive. Do not go to the Caverns of Chaos. GREYSTONE I have to, father. Greystone bows his head. TRAQUILL Shh – let him rest, Erik. GREYSTONE I’ll let him rest, but I won’t let him die. Greystone rises and exits the chamber, leaving King Richard, Traquill and Marko.
SCENE2 We watch as the camera pans another strangely red-orange colored hand resting on a chair. By the leather armor, we know it is Blackpool. Shot pans back to show BLACKPOOL sitting in a chair in one of the chambers of Castle Blackpool. He does not look happy. VECTOR Pity. BLACKPOOL I don’t want sympathy, Vector. I want a cure. Blackpool flexes his hand and looks at it. Shot pans to the WIZARD VECTOR sitting at a table in the chamber. He is wearing a hat that defies description – it almost looks as if a skyscraper is resting on his head. VECTOR Yes. I wish I could help. I told you casting that spell was dangerous. It’s an inexact science. A bite of the astrid fruit is the only cure. BLACKPOOL In the Caverns of Chaos. VECTOR Yes. Where the Book was kept before the great change. Where there is no mercy. BLACKPOOL Then I must go there. When I return, we must talk about this little accident. Blackpool stands.
VECTOR Yes, of course. But in the meantime, you should hurry. Erik Greystone is after the astrid fruit for his father. If he should beat you there… BLACKPOOL He won’t. Blackpool turns to gather up his sword and gauntlets. VECTOR I’m glad to hear it. A word of warning. The Caverns are filled with ancient traps. Don’t use your sword there. It’s protected against violence. It will bind you to whatever you would kill. BLACKPOOL Vector, I am tired of wizard tricks. I am sick of wizard talk. So let me give you a warning. If you lie to me, or if you try to deceive me – don’t get caught. Blackpool exits the chamber, leaving Vector alone. VECTOR I don’t intend to.
SCENE 3 There is a camera wipe like a page turning. The shot that is revealed is that of a rocky cliff/mountain wall. Shot dissolves to a cave-like entrance in the wall of rock. Through a tunnel-like opening we see the far-away figure of Greystone moving towards a tree with red leaves. There is also a bush-like growth at the bottom of the tree. Only one green fruit hangs on the tree. Shot dissolves to a closer shot of Greystone in the chamber. He moves to the tree, looks at the fruit, and plucks it, placing it in a leather pouch, which he then ties to his belt. Blackpool enters the chamber, his double-bladed dagger already drawn and in his right hand. BLACKPOOL Stop right there, Erik. Greystone looks at Blackpool’s hands. GREYSTONE So, Vector gave you the fever too. BLACKPOOL Unintentionally. GREYSTONE Sure. BLACKPOOL At the moment, I couldn’t care less how I got it. I’m only interested in getting rid of it. GREYSTONE And one bite of the fruit will cure you. Greystone ponders this and decides he might share the fruit. GREYSTONE And there’s still enough left to save my father. BLACKPOOL Very few things in this world would please me more than the death of your father. He’s been an enemy of my family since he was a boy. Twice he nearly killed my father. No. This time you both die. Blackpool reaches for his sword hilt. A large rock panel sliding down seals the entrance. Blackpool sheathes his dagger. GREYSTONE What have you done? Now we’re both sealed in here. I would have given you some. Blackpool turns both hands on his sword hilt. Give it to me now. Greystone draws his own sword. GREYSTONE Why don’t you try to take it? BLACKPOOL Come on! Blackpool and Greystone circle around the tree. Shot pans back to shot of them through the tunnel, then back to a closer shot of the sparring princes who are now behind the tree. GREYSTONE It’ll be interesting with you gone, Dirk. Your brother, Geoffrey, will command the North. Provided he can find it. Greystone yells and swings at Blackpool. BLACKPOOL You’re dreaming, Erik. A final, pitiful dream. Blackpool yells back and swings back at Greystone. GREYSTONE I don’t have time for this, Dirk. Let’s get it done. BLACKPOOL My pleasure. Blackpool and Greystone cross swords. As they connect, a red glow settles on each of their blades.
The blades of the swords disappear as the glow continues to go below their hands in a loop. They both stagger back and fall to the floor of the chamber.
SCENE 4 Shot opens on Castle Blackpool then pans into a closer shot of the imposing castle on its cliff. Shot dissolves to the doors of Vector’s chambers. The doors open and the WITCH BETHEL enters the room. BETHEL Hello, Vector. VECTOR What are you doing here, Bethel? Vector pours himself a goblet of wine. Bethel crosses over to Vector. BETHEL I want you to know that I’m aware of your little game. I must admit I’m quite surprised. VECTOR I surprise you? How? BETHEL I never dreamt you could summon up the crimson fever without your monocle. How did you do it? VECTOR That shall remain as much a mystery to you as how my monocle was stolen from me. That is a mystery to you, isn’t it, Bethel? BETHEL When Prince Blackpool returns I intend to tell him you deceived him intentionally. He’ll know you tried to kill him. And he’ll kill you. Bethel walks away, then turns back as Vector speaks. Vector chuckles. VECTOR Don’t you marvel at my abilities, Bethel? No other wizard could do what I do without a monocle. I possess great power. BETHEL Not for long. Bethel moves to the doors. VECTOR You could be part of it. How would you like to be Queen of Camarand? Bethel stops at the doors and turns to Vector. BETHEL What do you mean? VECTOR Let me tell you the truth. Bethel walks back towards Vector. BETHEL Hmm. I’d like to hear that, Vector. VECTOR Yes. Vector moves over to a chair and settles into it, holding his goblet. VECTOR I did conjure the crimson fever. I gave it to King Greystone and Prince Blackpool. BETHEL Why? VECTOR It’s all part of my plan. A plan you could fit into. BETHEL Keep talking, Vector. VECTOR King Greystone will die. With Erik Greystone and Blackpool in the Caverns of Chaos, chances are they’ll die too. Bethel walks over to the table where the wine vessel is and leans on the table. BETHEL Ah. Blackpool dies and you get your monocle back. VECTOR Yes. But I see the opportunity to go further. I can use Geoffrey to eliminate Marko. And you, sweet Bethel… Vector rises and walks over to Bethel VECTOR …can marry Justin Greystone. We can pretend to serve royalty, but in fact, we’ll control it.
BETHEL You’re so clever, Vector. VECTOR More than you’ll ever know. One Greystone left alive. How does that sound? BETHEL Intriguing. Bethel moves away from Vector again. BETHEL If it all works. VECTOR Can you seduce Justin Greystone? Bethel looks at Vector with amusement and disdain. BETHEL I can seduce anyone. VECTOR Of course. Vector turns to Bethel and walks to her. VECTOR After you accomplish that, return here and we’ll ensure our plan. We’ll make certain that Blackpool and Greystone are dead. BETHEL And what if Dirk Blackpool survives? VECTOR You mean, if he isn’t killed by Greystone, or the fever, or one of the traps and demons in the Caverns of Chaos? BETHEL That is a lot to ask, even of him. Vector and Bethel both smirk.
SCENE 5 Shot dissolves to Cavern entrance shot, then pans closer. Shot dissolves to Blackpool and Greystone lying on the chamber floor. They attempt to get up and move away from each other then discover they are chained together. A manacle encircles Greystone’s right wrist and Blackpool’s left wrist is also encircled. There is about a two-foot length of chain connecting them to each other. BLACKPOOL Vector’s warning. Blackpool punches Greystone. BLACKPOOL Give it to me now. GREYSTONE Come and get it. Blackpool grabs Greystone’s hand and swings him into the stone wall. Greystone yells and they struggle, rolling over and fighting. They roll near an opening in the side of the stone wall. Greystone looks up and sees a portcullis/gate with sharply spiked edges beginning to roll downward in its grooves towards them. The shot freezes and goes to animation/drawing of the portcullis/gate. FADE OUT.
